Whereas, traditional/legacy radio sends your voice along a frequency-modulated analog carrier wave, digital radio converts the audio of your voice, through a codec (think of it as a modem), and transmits the audio of your voice as digital information, which is then decoded by the codec on the receiving radio as the audio of your voice. Digital systems are a different form of communications, when contrasted against traditional methods of transmitting audio via analog means.
